Help give kids like Hannah a fair go at life

To become a student at Berry Street School means to have lived a life no child ever should. Those who attend the school, like Hannah, have often survived years of violence, abuse and neglect. Given what they go through, the courage and strength they show to turn up to school and work for a better life is amazing. Your generosity will help give kids like Hannah a fair go at life.

Hannah needs your help

Hannah was 13 when she arrived at Berry Street School. She was stick thin, couldn’t make eye contact, and having witnessed her mother regularly beaten by her stepfather, flinched when anyone approached her.

Helping her turn her life around would be a complex process.

"Hannah was a lost young girl who’d never had a chance at life."

– Catherine, Berry Street School teacher

Give them regular, nutritious meals.

Give them regular, nutritious meals.

Many students arrive at Berry Street School without having had breakfast. There may not be the money at home for it or the understanding of the need for healthy food. Regular, nutritious meals help emotional stability and learning.

Provide smart technology in classrooms.

Whenever possible, classrooms are equipped with iPads and desktop computers so children can engage with the Internet for learning. For many students, this is a first. Classrooms are also equipped with ergonomic furniture to encourage concentration.

We receive some government support but it’s not enough to provide the specialised learning environment Berry Street children need to recover from abuse and succeed in their education.
