Take Two specialist therapeutic training

Woman and child walking on the beach

Berry Street's Take Two program is a Victoria-wide therapeutic service helping to address the impact on children of the trauma they have experienced from abuse, neglect or adverse experiences. We also provide training, clinical services and consultancy for professionals and organisations around Australia who need specialist therapeutic expertise.

Excellence in Practice training

Take Two's Clinical Practice Development Team deliver a range of specialist therapeutic training including:

NMT Core Concepts: The Neurobiology of Developmental Trauma

This training presents key concepts from Dr Bruce D. Perry’s Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics (NMT). It supports participants to understand early development development from a neurobiological perspective. It also presents content that describes the impact of abuse, neglect and other traumas on that development.

Take Two case examples are used to illustrate how to link this knowledge to therapeutic intervention-planning. Delivered by certified NMT Trainers from the Take Two service.

Therapeutic Intervention Planning Principles

Delivered by certified NMT Trainers from the Take Two service, this training draws on Dr Bruce D. Perry’s Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics (NMT) to provide participants with key frameworks for intervention-planning with infants, children, young people and their families impacted by abuse, neglect and other traumas. The content will provide an understanding of "therapeutic" work beyond traditional "therapy".

Participants will be provided with clear and concrete concepts that can be applied across a range of contexts: from individual child-focused work, to the child's home, family and caregiving settings, schools and early childhood centres.

PACE in Practice

This training is based on the work of Dan Hughes, who developed the PACE (Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity and Empathy) approach as part of Attachment-Focused Family Therapy, and is targeted at practitioners who work directly with parents, carers and young people.

PACE forms one of the foundational platforms for all therapeutic work with traumatised children as it aims to help children and young people feel understood, connected and safe. The PACE approach embeds intentional relationship-based interventions into day-to-day interactions. Over time PACE reduces the child's shame and negativity, and builds understanding, trust and joy.

Facilitating Reflective Practice Groups

This training draws from psychodynamic, neurobiological, attachment-based and organisational learning frameworks to inform the facilitation of reflective practice groups. Participants will be equipped to support other professionals to critically and reflectively think about, and develop, their practice with diverse children, young people and families.

We provide guidance about planning for and facilitating groups from start to finish, including choosing an appropriate model, establishing a new group, ensuring participant safety, responding to commonly occurring dynamics and scenarios, managing endings and group closure. Content also includes specific considerations for online delivery of reflective practice.

The Importance of Relational Repair in Therapeutic Caregiving

This training is targeted at professionals working with children and young people who have experienced developmental trauma. The workshop aims to increase participants understanding of how the experience of shame and negative relational associations impact a child's abilities to trust and use relationships in a reparative way.
