With help of our generous supporters, like you, Berry Street is pioneering an alternative to traditional out-of-home care called the Teaching Family Model. Where children grow up surrounded by a loving family, supported by Teaching Carers who are specially trained to help them recover from their trauma and develop life skills so they can thrive into adulthood.
This is Zoe*, she is 11 years old and is living in one of our Teaching Family Model homes. Zoe was a victim of family violence and was removed from home for her own safety. She was desperately in need of a safe and stable home so she could begin to heal from her trauma.
She now lives in one of our Teaching Family Homes and has started on the road to recovery with the specialist help of her Teaching Family Carers, Georgie and Mike.
As the name suggests, the Teaching Family Model is about teaching, not telling, where children are raised and not managed.
With Georgie and Mike, Zoe found her first positive role models – the first adults who she could learn from, not be afraid of. And in her new home, she has interaction with other children – like siblings, that she’s always wanted.
