Overview

PACE (Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity and Empathy) forms one of the foundational platforms for all relationships with traumatised children as it aims to help them feel understood, connected and safe.

The PACE approach can be adopted by professionals, carers, teachers and anyone whose role requires them to build trust and connect with the young person’s perspective.

This workshop is based on the work of Dan Hughes, who developed the PACE approach as part of Attachment-Focussed Family Therapy (AFFT).

Learning outcomes

  • understand why traditional behavioural management approaches can end up in power struggles and repeated relational ruptures
  • understand the benefits of the PACE approach to the child and the carer
  • build knowledge about the four elements of PACE
  • extend knowledge about how to respond with a PACE approach
  • extend knowledge about how to support carers to use PACE in their day to day interactions.

Who should attend?

This workshop is targeted at those people who work directly with parents, carers and young people.

I found this PD today to be really valuable. It reinforced what I already do and gave me other ways to embed this approach in my everyday practice with teachers' parents and children. Jessamy was brilliant, she was very easy to listen to and used the PACE approach in her interactions with us throughout the day.
