As the cost of living continues to rise across the country, being confident and competent with our finances has never been more important.

Since 2003, Berry Street has supported more than 5,300 families to complete the Saver Plus program – a financial education and matched savings program.

The free program is offered to lower-income families to help them budget, create healthy savings habits and save for future education costs. Participants save $50 a month to go towards education costs, such as uniforms, books, laptops or sport fees. Once they complete the 10-month program and reach their financial goal, their savings are matched by ANZ (up to $500).

Many schools have supported Saver Plus since its inception, including Mooroopna Primary School in Victoria’s Hume region, by encouraging their communities to sign up with the financial wellbeing program.

Over the years, Mooroopna Primary School has supported more than 80 families to save a staggering $88,000 (including $44,000 in matched savings from ANZ). The school was recently recognised for their continued support through the Schools 4 Saver Plus Back to School Competition and awarded a $2,000 gift voucher.

Acting Principal Carla May was thrilled to receive the award and said that the prize money will go back into the school community.

Mooroopna Primary School is committed to our family’s financial wellbeing and believes that the financial education they receive through the Saver Plus program supports that. The program has helped many of our families to develop strong money habits that can be passed on to their children as they get older.

With the prize money, the school plans to purchase new gazebos and a portable audio system to help with school concerts and assemblies.

Berry Street’s Saver Plus Program Manager Sharon Wandin said that the Schools 4 Saver Plus Back to School Competition is a great incentive for the schools, as it encourages them to promote the Saver Plus program within their community.

It’s through the support of school communities, like Mooroopna Primary School, and their staff, that the Saver Plus program is able to reach as many families as it has.

“The staff at Mooroopna Primary School, including Business Manager Narelle Argus, have really driven the importance of financial education to their community, by previously offering Saver Plus workshops and information days to families.”

Berry Street’s Saver Plus team would like to thank Mooroopna Primary School, and all participating schools, for their continued support of the Saver Plus program.
