Berry Street’s Take Two recently delivered trauma-focussed workshops for staff at The Orange Door in Ballarat.

The Orange Doors are a network of state government-funded safety and support hubs for children and families, that were recommended by the Victorian Royal Commission into Family Violence.

The training consisted of three sessions provided by Take Two’s Clinical Practice Development team and drew on key principles of trauma-responsive care. The sessions were developed based on The Orange Door’s needs and were sequenced to support learning and successful ongoing implementation.

The workshops

The first session was a full day focussed on facilitating reflective practice for leadership staff.

The second session was also a full day supporting a group of practitioners to explore trauma-based approaches to working with families. It focussed on understanding and considering the experiences and needs of infants and children.

A final half-day session supported practice leaders to develop an implementation plan to embed newly acquired staff skills.

These families are meeting these practitioners in the context of really difficult times in their lives, often bringing significant trauma with them. If workers don’t provide a trauma-responsive approach, they risk exacerbating the trauma rather than helping them recover.

While these sessions were delivered in person, Take Two are also able to deliver training remotely or prepare online learning packages.
