Introduction to the Dynamic-Maturational Model (DMM) of Attachment & Adaptation

Berry Street Honorary Associate, Clark Baim, psychotherapist, clinical supervisor, group leader and author will deliver this two-part webinar based on Patricia Crittenden's Dynamic-Maturational Model (DMM) of Attachment & Adaptation.

Overview

This two-part webinar will introduce participants to key concepts in the field of contemporary attachment theory and apply this theory to working with adults, children, young people and families where insecure attachment and/or unresolved trauma and loss may be a significant factor affecting the health, safety and well-being of themselves or others. Clark will use presentation and discussion to explore how attachment theory can inform a deeper understanding of the people we work with and the approaches that may help them to better understand themselves, improve their relationships and live more fulfilling lives.

SESSION I: Understanding Strategies and Promoting Positive Change

In the first session participants will be introduced to Patricia Crittenden’s Dynamic-Maturational Model (DMM) of Attachment and Adaptation.

At the end of this session, participants will:

• understand the key elements of contemporary attachment theory and the key comparisons between the two primary models of attachment that are taught around the world.
• understand the Dynamic-Maturational Model (DMM) of Attachment and Adaptation as a strengths-based, non-pathologising, non-stigmatising model for understanding bio-psycho-social functioning.
• understand the developmental pathways that lead to the different attachment / self-protective strategies.
• understand the implications for assessment, formulation, and purposeful selection of treatment approaches.
• understand how the DMM offers an evidence-based, function-focused alternative to symptom-based diagnosis.
• understand why the DMM is particularly applicable to working with people who may be a danger to themselves or others.

SESSION II: Introduction to using the DMM to inform assessments and interventions

This session will provide participants with:

• a chance for multi-disciplinary professionals to develop a common language for discussing attachment, family dynamics and related issues.
• an introduction to several procedures used to assess attachment strategies in children and adults.
• an introduction to memory systems and discourse analysis as used in the Adult Attachment Interview.
• an introduction to functional formulation: assessment, formulation and treatment planning which is informed by an understanding of the underlying function of behaviour (i.e. the needs the person is trying to meet, and the meaning of their behaviour).
• an understanding of how to select treatment strategies to focus on bio-psycho-social formulations and interventions that go beyond symptom management and symptom reduction.

This webinar is for professionals from a range of disciplines who work with adults, children and families where insecure attachment and / or unresolved trauma and loss may be a significant factor affecting family members’ safety, health, and well-being.

Note: participants completing this webinar series will be well prepared to attend more in-depth training offered in the DMM, such as the Attachment and Psychopathology course, the Adult Attachment Interview course, and courses in childhood assessments. Information about how to access these courses will be provided.
