Help give Chloe the care and love she needs
3-year-old Chloe* suffered abuse and neglect from a young age and had never been taken to the doctors. When she was placed with her foster carer Claire*, she immediately noticed something wasn’t right.
“Chloe was very shy,” says Claire. “I had seen that shyness in children I fostered before. They’re deeply traumatised and they retreat into the safety of their own world.”
“But this was different. Chloe wasn’t making any sounds – let alone forming any words. I would call out her name across the name, and she wouldn’t turn around. I would say, “I love you Chloe”, and she wouldn’t even look up.”
Desperately worried, Claire took Chloe to the doctor, who shared the concern and recommended a hearing test. After many more appointments, the diagnosis came back. Chloe was profoundly deaf.
Claire jumped into action right away and got everyone in the family learning sign language so they could communicate with Chloe. She had been isolated with no way to communicate with her carers. But her foster parents went the extra mile to make sure she felt loved and included.
In the months that followed Claire travelled thousands of kilometres so Chloe could get her hearing tested weekly in preparation for bilateral cochlear implants. And later the whole family moved homes so that Chloe could attend a specialised school for the deaf.

I worked with Berry Street Yooralla to access all the services that Chloe needed. She had a physio for her walking, plus a specialist to develop her ability to eat.

Berry Street Yooralla exists to help those experiencing poverty, disability, violence and abuse, and to help families stay together in safe and healthy homes. We provide vital programs that work and are changing lives.
Despite these positive changes we’ve seen, for some young people and their families, life is getting worse. By donating to Berry Street Yooralla, you are helping us to care for children and young people who have experienced abuse and neglect.

We are investing heavily in our regular giving program in order to support the delivery of services to ever-increasing numbers of children and young people. In 2019/20, 47% of donations received by Berry Street is distributed to beneficiaries. Every dollar we spend on our regular giving program this year will return $3 over the next five years.
