We are proud to continue our partnership with Robert Tucker, Honorary Associate of Berry Street, and Director of RGT Training & Consultancy based in the UK. Robert is an internationally renowned specialist working with children, young people and families where there are concerns about sexual abuse and inappropriate or harmful sexual behaviours.

Overview

The Staying Safe Programme has been devised and written by Robert Tucker. It is aimed at those children and young people who are no longer in the families where abuse took place or where the offender is living elsewhere. It outlines a programme of 1:1 work with a child over an average of 26 hours and modules cover areas such as 'why am I seeing you; all about me; my family; my world; keeping safe: privacy, boundaries, good and bad touch; good and bad secrets; what is sexual abuse; how does it affect people; how does it happen; why did it happen to me/in my family; coping with memories; the effect on me and my family; it's not my fault'; ‘safety planning’ and ‘moving on'. Each participant will be provided with an electronic copy of the ‘Facilitators Manual’ and a ‘Resource Manual’ containing worksheets and direct work ideas.

This training (usually provided over 3 days) has been adapted to a webinar format. It aims to help participants provide a time-limited, focused and modular intervention programme for children and young people whose lives have been affected by child sexual abuse. It is designed to build upon and extend traditional ‘Protective Behaviours Work’ by ensuring that the work is applied to the family’s specific abuse circumstances. It seeks to help answer many of the key questions children have about such circumstances, such as ‘what is sexual abuse’, ‘why does someone do this’, ‘how does it affect me / my family’, ‘why did it happen to me/us’, ‘did my parent(s) know’, ‘is it my fault’, ‘why can’t a family member stay at home?’. It is a psychoeducational programme which seeks to supplement and not replace other therapeutic approaches and utilises screening tools to assist with decisions about whether a child is safe enough or ready to utilise this approach.

Rob is a delightful, entertaining and informative presenter. I particularly love the way he is able to convey complex ideas and concepts in a simple and common-sense format. The course would have been great delivered in-person but I feel that the main messages still came through and I walked away with a sound understanding of how the Staying Safe Programme is formatted and run.
